PE22 - Polymer Hardener
PE22 is a polymer hardener that can be added to wax to give it a higher melting point and a tough finish. It's an ideal additive for making hurricane candle shells, or as a over-dip when using surface decorations. It makes the shell have a higher melting point than the core candle, protecting decorations from the melt-pool.
Our experimentation showed that when PE22 is added directly to the wax pellets as they are melting, it doesn't doesn't blend well. It sits in the melted wax like tapioca and settles on the bottom into a gelatinous mass.
We found that PE22 needed to be melted on direct heat with a small amount of wax - we started with about a tablespoon. When melted fully, it has the consistancy of liquid glucose. Add more wax a little at a time, blend thoroughly and then add a little more. Repeat the process until you have tripled the voloume.
Add any colouring to your main wax before adding the PE22 mixture. Once you've added the PE22 mixture, stir thoroughly and pour as soon as possible.
Any surplus wax can be re-melted without any problems. We did find that the polymer made the wax opaque, so for hurricane shells we used pure paraffin wax with no additives to give the best translucency. It does allow you to achieve thinner shells which is a real bonus!
